I don't know about that title...ren faire this weekend? [I meant the blog is neglected not the boy] This little corner of internet real estate has certainly been neglected of late, but we have not been lacking in good outfits. B continues to develop more and more of his own style (there are a lot of super heroes involved) but, you know, I am his mother, so I definitely influence him at least.

I loved this outfit, and his silly pose is total rock star. The new skinny jeans are thrifted, the shirt and the shoes are from H & M. The rest of that gorgeousness? hey I made that!

Stripes on Stripes

I love a good stripe on my BBoy, and what's better than a good stripe? Stripes on stripes! Here we have a green and white long-sleeved thermal (from Filene's Basement, no idea of brand) with a blue and white H & M sleeveless tee, paired with a pair of hand-around khakis with tiny embroidered skulls (though you can't see them very well in this bad phone pic. Ahhhh, well my camera is still un-replaced, so I'm afraid all I have are blurry phone-pics these days)

This vest (from Old Navy) is actually a 2T, but I like the slightly shorter, slimmer fit. The Batman sweater was a cool find at H & M last Christmas. I got one for both BB and BFF.

Gotta love Carter's for basic cords. Affordable and a nice fit...very retro 70s. The boots he is wearing in several of these photos were an AWESOME purchase this fall from Zara Kids. (Plus it was like the last pair so they were on super sale)

I like the gold chain...he accessorized himself.

If you look closely, you can see the scrapes and bruises by his eye....he tripped and fell face first on some concrete steps...OMG!

Though Baby Boy has never been able to sit through all of Star Wars (episode 4, of course) (we have attempted it 3 times) he knows all of the characters. This shirt was a hand-around from BFF (who has sat through all of the movie) and it is being combined with some shorts from Wal-Mart, bought in Tennessee in desperation after he had a big poopy accident while having pictures taken with his cousin last year, his new slip-on tennies from H & M ($8, with 20% discount!) and his Dr. Seuss backpack given to him by his Grandparents, after the like 10th word he learned was Seuss.
I like the mono-chrome brown effect.

This picture is from B a little earlier in the spring (it has gotten hot all of the sudden, when did summer creep in?) and I love both the outfit and this shot of B. He is wearing his skinny jeans from H&M, a pair of classic red Chuck hightops, his Young Americans tee from Pluto, and a sweater I found at a thrift store...I think it is from French Toast or something, one of those companies that makes uniforms for kids.....in fact all of these clothes, except the Chucks, which were a hand-me-down, were bought at thrift stores. This whole outfit cost under $10. Oh, and the red sunglasses of course. No idea where those came from, his Dad got them.

Seriously, my son is gorgeous and funny and delightfully boyish. I couldn't pick just one pic of this outing at the zoo. The hat is a sun hat of mine I bought probably 10 years ago at Target; the pants are size 2T from the Gap (I think) but I set them aside over the winter and I think my plan of having him wear them as cute little clam diggers is working out; the sleeveless tee is from H & M, they have these great inexpensive 2 packs of tee shirts, one is patterned (usually a cute stripe) and one is solid. They are $7 for the sleeveless, $9 for the tee, and $12 for the long sleeves. I had a 20% off coupon when I bought these, so super cheap and super cute. This outfit is a little short on the original and big on the big-box, but since it is composed of basics (and items I am recycling for a new look) I think it is okay.

PS The shoes are from See Kai Run, and I got them last summer, and didn't think there was any way they would fit B, but somehow, I think because they are so soft and flexible, they do.

Baby Boy cracks me up. Look at his face in that first picture, I call it his boy face, I know when he makes it he is getting ready to be mischievous. This spiderman shirt has been featured before, but the various boys in my life (especially his Dad who picked it out for him) geek out on it whenever they see it....I think it is the first appearance of spiderman or something like that anyway. The pants are vintage, and I sort of forgot about them, but now B is almost grown out of them.

Baby Boy outgrew his beloved yellow rainboots, so I picked up another pair at my fave local joint, Smoochie Baby. These are from Tretorn and B really loves them. He's been asking to wear them rain or shine, but they are a bit big...I bought them a half-size up, but they run large, so he trips a little bit. As for the rest of the outfit the shorts are re-mixed from last year and come from H & M, the coat is a Salvation Army find from several years ago that is just now fitting. All and all a happy baby boy on a rainy day!

It says "Driving cross country in my truck" I get the red appliqued truck for a boy, but why did they feel the need to add the caption? Isn't the object itself enough to strike the imagination of a little boy? Why do they need to prescribe what he might be doing with his truck also? Anyway, it was a hand-me-down and I do like the red against the blue. Both the shirt and the shorts were originally from the Gap, though I bought neither of them there.

B was not cooperating with the style shot, but this is a little shot of B in motion. A friend just gave us this OshKosh flannel shirt. OshKosh has a nice line of really classic boy clothes, besides overalls they seem to have great shirts and tees. I have featured these pants before as well, they were a hand-me-down, and we love them, but we have a little trouble with fit. They have always been too big in the waist and so they fall down....now they finally fit in the waist, but they are too short....sigh....B is getting sooooooo big.....The other day I called him baby and he said:
"Mommy, why did you call me baby? I'm not a baby."
and I responded with what every Mommy always says when faced with that question:
"You'll always be my Baby."

I cut up a t-shirt he had with a batman logo on it and stiched it to the back of his puffy orange vest. Well here is B on Friday in a vest (he loves vests, don't know why, but given the option he gets very excited) and this one is from Tea. He is also wearing his new boots from Smoochie Baby. I had to look for a while for velcro closure boots (he needed to be able to take them on and off for school) and finally found these at one of my fave local spots. They were a little more than I had wanted to spend, but I justified it since the higher top meant I could stretch the wearability of his too short, two t pants. I love this pic of B, he is such a delight!

Endless Summer and Hand arounds

One week into my daily recording and I am already trying to catch up on posts.....It is still warm here so I decided to sneak in our fave green shorts one more time. I bought this tee a while ago on the sale rack at the Gap, but it was way too big for B, so I passed it up to BFF (who in spite of being a few months younger than B is a full year + ahead in size...he is a very tall kid!) for a while. It was BFF's favorite shirt for a good 6 months, but he finally outgrew it and handed it back to B. Soon we'll hand it back down to BFF's soon to arrive little brother! I like the handing back and forth; they get clothes, and we get the enjoyment of seeing other dear one's in favorite items. The clothes are not so much hand-me-downs as they are hand-arounds.

A few things about this outfit. First, we are enjoying a little bit of an Indian Summer here in Brooklyn. Does that make white pants after labor day okay? Second, I wanted baby boy to wear his yellow rainboots, but he wanted to wear the "vintage" reeboks (they are his new favorite shoes, all though they are really too big for him still) When I tried to talk him into the boots, he said, "but mommy it's not raining!" I guess truth and practicality trumped fashion in this case. Third, this is his new shirt, from Old Navy, but via my favorite Salvation Army on Bedford and No. 7th. We found it last week, however I finally got around to washing it the other day. B was so excited he wore it to bed and then to school the next day. I am zooming in for the close-up:

I never know how to dress myself this time of year, and now I have to figure out how to dress BB. I went for the sweater with shorts look today....I'm never sure about that, does it really work? I do like these "vintage" reeboks...vintage is another thing I am never sure about, these reeboks are about 5 years old, a hand-me-down, which makes them ancient in toddler years, but does that make them vintage? I see all these 80s clothes marked as vintage these days, but I still have some from my teen years...does that make me vintage? and is this how my mom felt when bell-bottoms came back in during the early 90s? Am I my mother? Vintage, such a fraught word.

We spent this weekend visiting with old friends....and it was so lovely. Baby Boy and I spent most of his first year watching my best friend's son, who is only 2 months younger than him. Now the 2 boys have such a beautiful relationship, even though they seem to be almost exact opposites in terms of temperament. We were at a party on Saturday and as it got later we let the boys watch a movie, and they sat together with BB's head resting on BFF's shoulder. It made me nostalgic for that year, so here are some commemorative pictures. (Don't the boys seem to be whispering to each other? As quick and mischievous as they were, I always suspected that they were communicating via some ancient baby tongue.)

Fashion Tyranny

This was the first chilly day in September, and I was so excited for Baby Boy to wear this jacket. I had bought it months earlier at the Salvation Army (originally from Gap) and I got out this outfit, but Baby Boy had other ideas in mind. HE pulled out his favorite orange tee, it is from a trip to the Chicago Aquarium and has a fish on the front of it. His father got it for him, but I think it is such a tacky, tacky tourist shirt. However, this was the first time BB had ever requested an item of clothing. Did I rise to the occasion, put my personal style aside, let BB express himself? No, I hid the shirt when he wasn't paying attention, and put on this nice plain black one instead. I have to say, my little repression of his idea took a lot of the enjoyment out of his outfit. However, it was a beautiful day splashing in the puddles with his friend, and since then I have let Baby Boy wear anything he requests, though mostly he is content for me to pick out his clothes (at least for a little while longer.)

This is Baby Boy's cousin. Evidently alternative head-gear is all the rage among the toddler set....look at this colander, what do you do with it? Wear it of course!!!

P.S. The awesome printed shirt is an Old Navy pajama top. I love their patterns, and since pajama tops are so much "skinnier" than regular shirts I buy them for BB all the time as regular shirts.

I haven't posted since July....I was just realizing today how much Little B has grown up these past three months. I was watching my friend's 15 month old trying to jump the other day, and I was trying to remember when it was that Baby Boy had first done that...I remember being so excited at the time....but I can't remember when it was. It all happens so fast, he speaks in full sentences, tells me little stories about the ants who live on the roof across the street, even compliments me on my morning fashion choices (sponge bob square pants boxers elicited a "WOW! Nice pants Mommy!") I wonder what I'll remember.

These are from the early spring, but I never got around to posting them. I love both of these photos of baby boy though, especially his mad little face in the swing, don't know why he was mad, maybe he was just worried?
The star hat is from this awesome store in the West Village that only sells things from Sweden, and one day baby boy totally took apart their train set while I was shopping for a gift so I felt like I had to buy something and I settled on this hat from Molo which I must admit I love, but his Dad thinks looks very girley. The green pants are (still) from Lucky Wang, and the coat is a hand me down.
In the swing picture, though you can't see it, his shirt is another vintage superman shirt, this time an old costume top. I hate to say it, but the pants and vest are from the Gap.

The tee is from Brooklyn Junior,
and I really need to collect more of their designs, particularly the VW Bus. My sister brother and I could regale you with many a tale of bouncing about in the back of my Dad's old, or rather series of, old VW Buses, but that's a story for another day.
This shot of B-Boy is so cute I can hardly stand it. He's wearing a hat I picked up at Flying Squirrel, and some seer-sucker shorts I grabbed off a local discount store rack. The expression, all my baby boy.

Baby boy got this haircut in January, but I never put up pictures. Since I don't keep a scrapbook or baby book, I just wanted to post pictures so I would remember that this was his first haircut. I was so sad after it happened, but he does look cute, like such a grown-up little boy.

A friend recently lent us Sesame Street, Old School. Both baby boy and I have been enjoying it, but I think the multi-cultural, controversial construction site playground, invisible Snuffleupegous, alphabet, counting, love -fest that was the original might be influencing the way I dress Baby boy. The green pants are from the sale rack at Lucky Wang and the shirt is from my recent Salvation Army obsession (99c!!!). 1970s sofa is ours.

I can't believe that baby boy is actually a toddler now, I'm going to have to start calling him toddlin' boy. My camera has been broken (though I did just go on a week-long Salvation Army spending spree, so new outfits soon) so I haven't really been able to take a lot of photos. However, I have some looks from last year at this time (when he was still learning to sit up!!!!!).

I haven't posted anything in a while...Baby Boy has been keeping me super busy, in fact he just turned one. This is my little native new yorker on his first birthday. (Angelina Jolie was actually behind us this day with 2 of her kids, I was a little worried that she would think I was trying to snap pictures of her, but then I realized that the moms and nannies all seemed to have lost any sense of politeness or decorum and were forming a circle with their camera phones!!!! I really did feel sorry for her, the kids didn't seem to notice, but still!!!!!!)

I only have a limited amount of time to control what he sees, hears, and wears, and I don't want to waste it by pre-subscribing him to consume branding. Baby Boy's daddy bought this shirt, it is made from recycled fabric, and those sleeves are cashmere. The shirt has a dryclean only label, now I ask you, what kind of man buys a dryclean only garment for his son? Apart from the question of chemicals how is this practical? Well I have washed this garment several times with no ill-effects, and I must admit, labeling aside, I do love this shirt. Is the peace sign over the recycled camo too much? Baby Boy is wearing his favorite spring hat with pin-striped pants and his Robeez boots.
